Fire Chief Selects Charles W. Ryan For Deputy Chief

The following was sent to us by Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department:

Fire Chief Ronald L. Mastin has selected Battalion Chief Charles W. Ryan for promotion to Deputy Chief. Chief Ryan will be assigned as Deputy Chief, B-Shift, Operations Bureau, effective October 23, 2010. Since August 2007, he has served as a field Battalion Chief in the First Battalion.

Chief Ryan began his career as a recruit firefighter in January of 1994, and was initially assigned to Fire and Rescue Station 24, Woodlawn. Career assignments and promotions include:

  • Technician, Fire and Rescue Station 38, West Centreville, 1997
  • Lieutenant, Fire and Rescue Station 11, Penn Daw, 2000
  • Captain I, Fire and Rescue Station 10, Bailey's Crossroads, 2002
  • Captain II, Fire and Rescue Station 29, Tysons Corner, 2005 

As Deputy Chief, B-Shift, he will be one of three operational deputies, and will supervise the daily activities of all 37 fire and rescue stations within the department. He will be responsible for approximately 350 personnel.

Chief Ryan received a Bachelor's in political science from Siena College, NY, and a Juris Doctor from Pepperdine University School of Law, CA. He is President of the Fairfax County Professional Fire & Rescue officers Association, an adjunct professor, Northern Virginia Community College since 2003, and a member of Virginia Task Force 1.

Chief Ryan and his family reside in Ashburn, Virginia.
