Local Business Makes Local Difference: Cheers Sports & Team Joe Charities Assist Inova Fairfax NICU

This week, WUSA 9 recognizes Cheers Sports for its neighborhood contribution through Team Joe Charities.

Thanks to Andrea Alexander (Aesa Consulting) for nominating Cheers Sports as this week's Local Business ... Local Difference.

Team Joe Charities was formed in 2007, and the organization earned its name from Joe Petrella, who was born 12 weeks early and weighed only 1.5 pounds. Joe Petrella is the son of Denny Petrella, owner of Cheers Sports in Ashburn. Cheers Sports opened in 1995, and it serves all of Loudoun County with a full line of retail sporting goods.

Following Joe's premature birth, he spent 104 days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children, and the staff there helped to save his life. Joe is now a healthy, happy, and altogether normal four-year-old boy, and the charity named in his honor raises funds to benefit the NICU credited with saving him.

To date, Team Joe Charities has raised more than $125,000 for the Inova Fairfax NICU. The NICU is a Level 3 care facility, which is the most advanced of its kind in Northern Virginia, and the unit has more than 60 beds. It is one of the largest in the nation, and it admits high-risk infants from all over our region.

Team Joe is presently hosting its 2011 Raffle, and proceeds therefrom will fund the completion of a family lounge that will be part of the new NICU that will be built by Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children.
