Finding the best Virginia wineries this summer is now easier than ever, thanks to Rick Collier and Nancy Bauer. The duo created a mobile guide to the Virginia Wine Country called “Virginia Wine in my Pocket.” This application is now available for $3.99 on iTunes your iPad, iPhone, and iTouch.

Between July and December of last year Rick and Nancy, while still working full-time jobs, went on a tour they dubbed “150 Wineries in 150 Days Tour.” During this time they researched, wrote, and photographed for the application, which they published this past March.

“I’ve now taken a sabbatical to focus on Virginia Wine in My Pocket, and our first app, called Rehoboth in My Pocket, which was published last year,” said Bauer.

During the 150 day tour they found themselves driving the backroads of Northern Virginia and Charlottesville, along with one memorable 9-day stretch that took them to 34 different wineries in southern Virginia.

The couple ended up with 10,000 professional style photos and blog write-ups to create the application including maps, directions, and detailed notes.

“The app has gotten a terrific response, which isn’t surprising given the surge in popularity of wine travel in Virginia, due probably in equal part to the Governor’s prioritization of the wine industry on his agenda, the increase in the quality of Virginia wine, and the increase in the number of wineries to nearly 200, making it the fifth-largest state in the nation in terms of number of wineries,” said Bauer.

The pair are looking forward to the fact that the Virginia Wine in My Pocket app will be given to wine bloggers from across the country who are attending the American Wine Bloggers Conference in Charlottesville next month, thanks to support from Virginia Tourism Corporation.
