Loudoun County Students Receive Scholarships from Ashby Ponds Retirement Community

(Ashburn, Va.) - On Saturday, July 13, seven recent high school graduates from Loudoun County were honored with scholarships toward higher education from Ashby Ponds retirement community.  The recipients, who work for the community’s dining services department, will receive up to $4000 (or up to $500 per semester) in scholarships paid directly to the college or trade school of the student’s choice. Funds for the scholarship program have been donated by residents and staff at the community.

At Ashby Ponds, there are nearly 100 high school and college students from Loudoun County and Fairfax County who work for the community’s dining services department.  The students work in a variety of capacities including as servers, restaurant assistants, utility workers, and service coaches.  The students may be eligible for scholarships from the community by satisfying a number of requirements, including:

Supervisor Shawn Williams and Loudoun County Administrator Tim Hemstreet visited Ashby Ponds retirement community on Friday, June 28 to share information on area transportation changes and local development updates:

1)  Stoplight at Ashby Ponds Boulevard and Gloucester Parkway

Supervisor Williams shared that an item will be brought forth at an upcoming Board meeting to fund a signal warrant study at the intersection in front of Ashby Ponds.  He indicated that if approved, a stoplight would likely be erected but not turned on until completion of the Gloucester Parkway extension in 2016.  Additionally, flashing pedestrian signals would be added to the intersection for those crossing to and from Smith Switch Road.  Many Ashby Ponds residents have expressed concern in the past over the safety of this intersection.

Text to Donate Initiative with The Schwan Food Company to benefit Loudoun Interfaith Relief

The Schwan Food Company has partnered with Loudoun Interfaith Relief (LIR) to increase awareness about the importance of donating during the summer months. Our Summer Pack Program provides families with school aged children and extra day of meals, breakfast, lunch and dinner, twice a month to supplement the food provided by Loudoun County Schools during the school year.

Donate Non-Perishable Foods at Loudoun County Harris Teeter Stores to benefit Loudoun Interfaith Relief

In partnership with the Washington Nationals, Loudoun County Harris Teeter stores are hosting a food drive to support Loudoun Interfaith Relief now through July 8, 2013.

Harris Teeter announced in May a $225,000 donation to its food bank partners, which includes Loudoun Interfaith Relief (LIR) and is hosting this food drive to help raise additional awareness for the problem of hunger. Donations made at Loudoun County Harris Teeter locations will benefit the people and families that LIR provides food to locally. Food collection bins will be placed in the Loudoun County Harris Teeter locations lobby for food donation.

The Tigerlily Foundation is pleased to announce the 2nd Annual Pink Boa 5k Run/Walk, on September 15, 2013, at 8:00 a.m. at  Fairfax Corner. The race will start at the Fairfax Corner Pavilion, 11945 Grand Commons Avenue, Fairfax, Virginia. Registration is open, and participants can sign up as individuals or create teams.

Ashby Ponds Holds Father’s Day Fishing Tournament

On Saturday, June 15, nearly 100 residents and their guests visited for the first annual Father’s Day Fishing Tournament at Ashby Ponds retirement community in Ashburn, Va.   

Throughout the day, 27 fish were caught, but two Ashby Ponds grandsons were crowned champions for the tournament challenges: Nate Peacock for “Longest Single Fish” and Garrett Ferguson for “Largest Combined Total”.  Each tournament participant received a Gold Sport Award Certificate.

Prior to the tournament, the pond where the event took place was stocked with a number of species to make for a full functioning ecosystem including:  100 Large Mouth Oswego Bass, 500 Red and Blue Gills, 100 Stripped Yellow Perch, 100 Black and White Crappies, 100 Channel Catfish, 100 Small Breeder Shiners, 100 Rosey Reds, 1,000 Fathead Minnows, 100 Assorted Snails, 100 Crayfish, 100 Giant Jumbo Bullfrog Tadpoles, and 500 Daphnia.

Goose Creek Village Shopping Center Hosts Family Fun on June 8 with a Summer Dollar Sidewalk Stroll

 

Gather your family — including your pets — and stop by Goose Creek Village Shopping Center on June 8 between 1 PM and 5 PM for the Summer Dollar Sidewalk Stroll. Goose Creek merchants will participate, as will other small, local businesses, and the event will benefit Loudoun Youth, Inc., a local nonprofit organization that offers youth development and leadership programs to Loudoun County teens.

Guests at the family-friendly outing will enjoy food samplings from the center’s restaurants. Passion Fin, already dubbed a top sushi restaurant in Northern Virginia, will offer free California roll samples and $3 sushi plates, while East Wind China Bistro will offer free samples and coupons.
