Loudoun County Board of Supervisors Declares 2012 Lyme Disease Awareness Year

From Loudoun County: In recognition of the serious effects of Lyme disease, the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors has declared 2012 as Lyme Disease Awareness Year.

The Board adopted a resolution and proclamation in which the Board “commits to mitigating the devastating effects of Lyme disease on the citizens of Loudoun.”  The Board also voted to send a ten-point action plan, which will include a community education and outreach effort, to the Finance, Government Services and Operations Committee for review.

As detailed in the action plan, a link to the county’s Lyme disease Web page – www.loudoun.gov/lyme - has already been placed prominently on the county’s home page. The county will also begin soliciting bids to apply insecticides at some county-owned parks.

What's on Your Mind?

Scientific study after scientific study has confirmed, absolutely, that our brains are much more attracted to negative images and thoughts. The brain typically detects negative information faster than positive information. Our brains actually have a negative bias. We now know that you can rewire your brain to think and act in ways that lead to greater success and happiness. This is good information to have because it allows us to be aware and then to shift it towards the positive.

For example, once you are aware that you are harboring negative thoughts think of yourself walking down a path that has a fork…the right path is taking you towards more negative. So what you need to do is as soon as you become aware, stop and turn around, and then go on the left path.

Realize you have a choice…and choice is empowering!

Shift your emotions and take charge of your life!

5 Reasons Spray-On Tans are Better

5 Reasons Spray-On Tans are Better

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the country. Furthermore, around 90 percent of all skin cancer cases are associated with exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Even indoor tanning beds, which 30 million people use per year, pose health risks. Because of this, many people are in search of a healthier option. Today, the spray-on tan option is increasingly offering many benefits over other forms of tanning.

“Many people are not familiar with the type of spray-on tan that we offer,” explains Meghan Farrar, owner of Golden Glow Mobile Spray Tan (www.goldenglowtansva.com), located in NoVa. “Those who do know and opt for it find out just what a great-looking tan they can get, and how much better it is than sunbathing or being exposed to UV tanning booths.”

Spray-on tans provide many benefits, compared to other forms of tanning, including:

A letter from Pat Wirth, Owner of Potomac Falls Express Lube and Car Wash:

Dear Friends,

March 24, 2012 is Joey Angel's 8th birthday. Guess what he wanted for his birthday? A blood drive to help keep him alive! You see, Joey has Severe Aplastic Anemia and is waiting for a bone marrow transplant. His mother and I are friends and since March is Red Cross month and I am a member of the Loudoun County Leadership Council for the American Red Cross we thought this was a match made in "heaven" (pun intended!). Joey and his family live in Potomac Falls and Janel, his mom, works for Cardinal Bank.

Tips for Eating Healthy When Dining Out

March is National Nutrition Month across the country. It’s also an ideal time to look at what we can do to make eating out healthier, especially when you consider that as many as half of the meals that people eat today come from restaurants. In fact, the National Restaurant Association reports that it’s forecasting roughly $631 billion in restaurant sales for 2012. In a typical day across the country, restaurants sell around $1.7 billion worth of food.

Clearly, we are nation that enjoys dining out. But one look at the obesity rates and other health issues makes it apparent that we also need to strive for making healthier meal choices, even when we are at restaurants.

Sleepless Nights? Getting Help Can Benefit Your Body & Mind!

There is no question about it; sleep is absolutely essential to good physical and mental health.
